In Detroit, such a brash juxtaposition is becoming the norm. As the city’s creative class grows, it’s spilling into Detroit’s historic building stock. Everard Findlay’s extreme sports vision set inside of Detroit’s largest art object makes a bold statement.
“The Beacon Project will be a series of events celebrating the people, history and culture of Detroit,” said Peter Cummings, the real-estate developer who’s one of the principals behind The Platform, the company in charge of the Fisher’s restoration and programming.
The Fisher Building has been an iconic landmark in Detroit since its completion in 1928. While its significance in Detroit’s history never waned, The Fisher’s position in the city’s growth and real estate market has. Through The Platform’s stewardship— respecting its historic integrity, activating its retail and office spaces, and developing a new brand—the Fisher Building will be the beacon for inclusion and transformation in Detroit.
The Fisher Building has played a seminal role in Detroit’s history. The Fisher was imagined as a building to honor the people of Detroit—an ode to the American work ethic and to American artisans. The Fisher Building is visible from many neighborhoods of Metro Detroit. The reactivation of the arcade will establish this space as the main public gathering area for New Center and beyond, a place for cultural and community programming, fine food and beverage and distinctive retail.
The Greater New Center area, located at the entrance to downtown Detroit, is comprised of 4 distinct neighborhoods that pinwheel around the intersection of Woodward Avenue and Grand Boulevard, one of the most important traffic arteries, connecting the city center with its surrounding neighborhoods. Nestled between I-75 to the east, MI-10 to the West and I-94 to the South, Greater New Center is easily accessible by car from all directions. Public transportation is strongest and most accessible in New Center, featuring several stops of the new light-rail, all major bus routes running through the Woodward/Grand Blvd intersection, and Detroit’s Amtrak station at Woodward and Baltimore Street providing rail transportation to Ann Arbor and Chicago. The 4 neighborhoods, New Center, TechTown, Milwaukee Junction and Northend, are seamlessly located within a square mile, but offer distinct “work, live and play” experiences. Greater New Center is the perfect representation of Detroit’s economic and industrial might of the past, and the creativity and business innovation of today.
